Pickpockets mar otherwise ‘peaceful’ Sinulog celebration

REPORTS on people victimized by pickpockets during the Sinulog grand parade continue to pile up at the blotter of the Fuente Osmeña Police Station.

In the absence of violent incidents like stabbing and shooting, Cebu City Police Office Director Patrocinio Comendador Jr. said the Sinulog 2010 was peaceful and orderly.

He said there were no violent incidents related to the Sinulog, unlike the year before that saw a few cases of stabbing and shooting near the parade route.

Comendador, Sinulog security commander, said he was grateful for the forces that helped the city police force keeping the event peaceful.

These are the augmentation force from the Regional Mobile Group 7, Central Command, the Muslim community in Cebu and the Civilian Auxiliary Group.

Most challenging

He said crowd control was their most challenging task.

The Fuente station received 15 pickpocket incidents last Sunday.

Most of the victims, local and foreign tourists alike, lost their wallets and cellular phones.

Also last Sunday, two men were arrested and detained at the station.

One man was caught masturbating and the other was accused of touching the breast of a female spectator.

Jojo, 30, of Barangay Luz, who was reportedly drunk, was arrested for allegedly masturbating while watching a woman in a skimpy outfit along Mango Ave. past 6 p.m.

Several people, who saw what he was doing, sought police assistance.

Another man identified as Christopher Gamo, 31, was arrested for touching the breast of a 21-year-old woman at the corners of R. R. Landon St. and Os-meña Blvd.

The woman shouted for help, which caught the attention of the police. (JTG/with reports from JFT of Sun.Star Superbalita)
