SINULOG 2011 activities started last week with a solemn procession, novena masses and the parade for the school contingents.
As Cebu gets into fiesta mode in honor of the Sto. Niño, the Child Jesus, suggestions have started cropping up on how to make the coming celebration better than the last.
Reports said Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has denied the request of beer makers to be allowed to sell beer at the Fuente Osmeña rotunda during the Sinulog. This was a first step into somehow making this year’s celebration controllable.
Past Sinulogs have been marked by hooliganism, mostly by drunks who had too much of the celebrations.
The Cebu City Government and the Sinulog Foundation Inc. formally opened Friday the Sinulog 2011 celebration with a mass at the Basilica del Sto. Niño, some performances by Sinulog dancers and a fireworks display.
During the mass, Msgr. Roberto Alesna said “the Sto. Niño has almost become a prop in every Sinulog presentation.” He suggested to devotees to not let this happen and to find a balance between Christian values and performing certain rituals. (more)
