Sinulog Festival 2011

BETTER production, livelier performances and more surprises are anticipated much in the 31st year of the Sinulog festivities.

Sinulog, the grandest festival of Cebu, is a celebration that reflects the cultural, social and spiritual traditions of the populace.

Ricky Ballesteros, executive director of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI), said the preparations for this year’s festival started in July last year.

Aside from the street presentations of 40 participating contingents and the penitential procession and masses, new activities are being introduced this year.

The first poster making contest was launched this year to encourage children to showcase their talents as they capture their perspective of Sinulog.

The first Sinulat Awards – Sinulog literary awards for short story writing, poetry, and essay writing – will be held also this year.

Auditions for the first Sinulog Musicfest (band competition) and Sinulog Best Dance Crew were also done and six finalists for each competition were hailed.

Aside from the cultural shows, street parades and parties, another must-see is this year’s Chinese-inspired grand finale on January 16, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cebu City Sports Center.

“Another must watch is the grand fireworks, which will feature the latest never-been-seen pyrotechnics coming from the water,” Ballesteros said. (SBG/Sunnex)
