O CALM her nerves, Cherry May Fernandez said she tried to forget she was performing in a singing contest. Reality contradicted her, but with a pleasant surprise.
The song “Saloma Sa Gugmang Nahanaw,” which Fernandez interpreted, bagged the grand prize of the 31st Cebu Popular Music Festival last night at the New Cebu Coliseum.
“Wala ko magdahum nga makadaug ko (I never expected to win),” Fernandez told reporters.
The song was written by Glenn Salve and arranged by Nendel Endrina. It was a big night for them. Aside from taking home the P150,000 grand prize, Fernandez was also adjudged as the Best Interpreter.
Another composition by Salve, “Pastilan,” won the third prize (P50,000). Second prize (P100,000) went to Eugene Tan’s “Call Center Agent,” interpreted by Jay-arr Librando.
Fernandez said she was not so concerned about winning. She was more conscious of the risk that she might forget some lines.
It was Salve’s first time to win the grand prize. He said he put much effort into his songs to make them shine. (more)
