The Sinulog beat reaches its crescendo in the coming days. For Ricardo “Ricky” Ballesteros, it is a time of reckoning: will Sinulog this year be successful? Will it be better than in the previous years?
Ballesteros, basically a sports organizer, recalls how he became executive director of the Sinulog Foundation. A graduate of political science from the University of the Visayas, he was employed in Cebu City Hall and assigned to the city sports commission where he became executive director. While there, Dodong Aquino, then executive director of the Sinulog Foundation, would ask him to host the Sinulog festivities. When Aquino retired in 2002, he asked Ballesteros to replace him, an offer he first refused, believing that the post should go to Dolly Suzara who was Aquino’s assistant. Suzara preferred to be project director and so Ballesteros became Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director, and together with Suzara, has propelled the Sinulog festivities to what it is today, the biggest festival in the Philippines, if not in Asia.
