Sinulog sa Kabataan performers practice steps

WITH only a few days before the Sinulog sa Kabataan competition, participants from different barangays in Cebu City and towns in Cebu are busy rehearsing their presentations.

Among them are the contingents from the Liloan National High School and Cebu City Don Carlos Gothong Memorial National High School.

A participant from the Gothong high school said during a break from their practice at the Cebu City Sports Center that they are joining the Sinulog for experience and incentives.

The participants from Gothong are mostly students, but some alumni of the school volunteered as choreographers. Most of them are not new to joining the Sinulog contest. One participant said he has been joining the contest for seven years now, while another said “12 years.”

The students are exempted from taking two periodical exams for the Physical Education (PE) subject if they join the Sinulog dance. Aside from that, they are given free snacks.

Asked about their source of funding, the alumni from Cebu City Don Carlos Gothong Memorial National High School said: “We have sponsors.”

The contingents practiced their presentations complete with props. The group from Liloan danced with buri hats and flowers, while students from Gothong practiced with large farmer baskets and native handmade winnowing basket known as “nigo.”

They have their own choreographers who instructed them on the proper steps and positioning. (LRM/Sunnex)
