Fireworks tilt to light up sky in north reclamation

ALL eyes should be in the sky Saturday night for the first ever Sinulog fireworks competition at the North Reclamation Area (NRA).

For the first time in the 29-year history of the Sinulog, Cebuanos and visitors will be treated to a spectacular fireworks display competition the night before the grand parade Sunday.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director Ricky Ballesteros said the management of SM mall volunteered to shoulder the prizes for the competition, which will be participated in by suppliers from all over the country.

Cebu will be represented by Barangay Babag, Lapu-Lapu City.

Bohol and Negros Oriental, Ballesteros said, will also be represented.

He said the fireworks display will be for 10 minutes per team, and will be judged according to the design, colors, and timing to an accompanying music.

The contest will be held around 7 p.m. in front of the SM North Wing, with entry to the venue open to the public.

At the Cebu City Hall, barangays were told to just collect garbage during the Sinulog without minding their respective boundaries, just to ensure that Cebu City is devoid of trash during the festivity.

Cooperation

Collectors who see a pile of trash along the way must pick them up regardless of whether it is in the territory of another barangay.

Acting Mayor Michael Rama said this is the set-up agreed for the Sinulog.

“The Association of Barangay Councils ignored boundaries and adopted a big-brother program in the garbage problem. The small barangays, if capable on what is required, can also help,” he said.

The barangays, he said, are a great help in the effective collection of garbage, with at least 55 barangays with 110 trucks collecting their own garbage.

The City Department of Public Services (DPS) has around 25 dump trucks, which collect garbage from the city’s main thoroughfares, some public markets and commercial establishments.

From 9 p.m. Sunday until sunrise the next day, 600 DPS personnel and volunteers will be fielded to clean the streets after the Sinulog grand parade. (RHM/Sun.Star Cebu)
