Politicians, movie stars join Sinulog

BY all accounts, this year’s Sinulog grand parade was a success, with no hitches in the production.

The rain that lasted for a few minutes failed to spoil the celebration. But it forced organizers to ask five contingents to perform at the rubberized oval track of the Cebu City Sports Center because the stage was wet.

“There was no flaw in the flow of contingents, even when it rained. The judges barely even noticed that the contingents were made to transfer from the stage to the rubberized track,” said Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) executive director Ricky Ballesteros. (More photos)

The celebration made some visitors comment that Cebu is not suffering from an economic crisis.

“There is no economic crisis in Cebu. The end of the Christmas season is after Sinulog,” Sen. Miguel Zubiri said, laughing.

“The Sinulog is getting better every year in terms of organization. And the number of contingents is just getting bigger,” Zubiri said.

The Lumad Basakanon contingent, for example, spent more for costumes and props this year than in previous years.

Norman Navarro, the group’s choreographer, said that for the costume and props alone, they already spent about P800,000. (more)
