Monaliza Ambasa and Anthony Nerza were the best Filipino finishers of this year’s marathon.
Ambasa finished in 3:14 to conquer the women’s division in spite of cramps that slowed her down in the last five kilometers.
The serial marathoner from Davao defeated Cebu’s own Mary Joy Tabal (3:15) and Kenyan Susan Jemutai (3:16). Only a minute separated the three runners.
Jemutai, who was the second placer of the Milo Marathon, led during the first 28 kilometers of the race before Ambasa and Tabal took their chance and overtook her in the last 10 kilometers.
The two runners went head to head in the last seven kilometers until Tabal experienced cramps in the last two kilometers, giving Ambasa the opportunity to take the lead. (more)
