Devotees welcome Sto. Niño’s return to Talisay after 5 days in Cebu City

AFTER staying for five days in Cebu City for the annual ceremony, the holy image of the Señor Sto. Niño de Cebu finally returned home to Talisay City yesterday.

Amid heavy downpour, the holy icon, which was blessed by the late Pope John Paul II in 1990, was brought back to Talisay City in a motorcade from the Guadalupe Parish Church around 8 a.m.

The rain did not stop thousands of devotees, including government workers and students, from lining up the major thoroughfares just to greet and wave their hands at the glass-encased Señor Sto. Niño.

The convoy passed beneath the flyover of Barangay Tabunok, a crowded business center in Talisay.

Hundreds more turned up for the mass, officiated by Msgr. Rommel Kintanar of the Sta. Teresa de Avila Parish Church, at the City Hall grounds.

Vice Mayor Alan Bucao and four members of the City Council joined the motorcade that arrived at City Hall past 9 a.m.

After the mass, the motorcade proceeded to the Sta. Teresa de Avila parish church in Barangay Pobalacion where the Señor Sto. Niño will stay overnight before it will be brought back to its sanctuary at the Hesus Nazareno Shrine in Barangay Cansojong.

Msgr. Cristobal Garcia, the custodian, founded the Society of the Angel of Peace that runs the Hesus Nazareno chapel.

The image of the Señor Sto. Niño de Cebu sailed down the Mactan channel aboard a private yacht for the fluvial procession last Saturday after it stayed overnight at the National Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue City. (GC/Sun.Star Cebu)
