Mayor ‘ready to let go’ of Sinulog chairmanship

SINULOG 2011 was the 10th year Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama served as the overall chairman, albeit, the first time as mayor.

He said he does not wish to hog the chairmanship and, in fact, offered it to Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young, but the latter declined. Young did not disclose his reason for doing so.

Rama, as vice mayor for nine years, was the overall chairman of the Sinulog; so was former vice mayor Renato Osmeña before him.

Rama, however, explained the Sinulog chairmanship doesn’t automatically go to the vice mayor, since Osmeña also held the position when the latter was still a councilor.

“The important thing is continuity,” said Rama.

He said he is ready to let go of the position as long as there is someone willing to take it who can assure his or her active involvement in the festivities.

Rama said he will check with the council if anyone is willing to serve hands-on during the Sinulog grand parade and not just manage it from a distance. (more)
